The Poetry of Christina Rossetti and Dante Gabriel Rossetti: Same Femme, Different Fate

Siblings Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Christina Rossetti both lived during the Victorian era and wrote poetry which epitomizes the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Although they were related, these two poets were drastically different, and their differences are evident in their poetry. Dante Gabriel was infatuated with beautiful women and many of his poems express sexual desire, while Christina was intensely devoted to God and many of her poems provide moral instruction. However, these poets both make femme fatales the subjects of their poems “Body’s Beauty,” “The Card-Dealer,” “The World,” and “Babylon the Great.” This paper analyzes the different ways in which Dante Gabriel Rossetti uses the image of a dangerous, eroticized woman to symbolize the threat that the power of female beauty poses to a man\u27s life, while Christina Rossetti uses this image to symbolize the threat that worldly desires pose to a person\u27s eternal life

Femmes Fatales as Mythological Creatures in Romantic and Victorian Poetry

openThe thesis starts by giving a general definition of femme fatale and by talking about women’s role during the Nineteenth century, myth and mythological creatures. It then moves towards the femme fatale in romantic poetry, analysing selected poems of John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Finally, it discusses the fatal woman in victorian poetry with selected poems of Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the Romance of Loss

Through paired poems and paintings, Dante Gabriel Rossetti explored the nature of Love—both physical and spiritual—as made evident by distance or absence. Influenced early by his familiarity with Dante Alighieri and a confluence of changing social and artistic attitudes, Rossetti transformed the dialogue around him to a more personal internal conversation, revealed by pen and brush. This paper examines the dynamic of that pervasive thread in Rossetti’s work through a discussion of the influences upon the artist, the artist’s effect upon important figures of mid- to late nineteenth century England, and the important relationships that shaped his discourse. In addition, commentaries on a number of Rossetti’s paired works delineate the interplay between his written and painted “words” as they reveal the progression of his thoughts
